Under a Mushroom … Again

Anita Lobel :: Under a Mushroom

“Under the mushroom lived Mr. and Mrs. Troll …”

I remember when I got this as a kid I was enthralled by it. I don’t know if it was the slight hippy-daze hangover it seemed to have, the lure of living under a mushroom, the European feel … but I poured over this non-stop. At the time, it was so different in style from the other books I was being given, and the story was just off-kilter enough to set me off. Back at the parental mushroom, they had held onto it … for more years than I’m going to admit to and I had to have it back.

It’s a simple story of some trolls living peacefully under a mushroom. One day it starts to rain and all kinds of folks start scurrying by and end up taking refuge with the trolls. Of course the obligatory party starts that ends in the destruction of the trolls’ mushroom. After everybody falls asleep, mushrooms spring up overnight and in the morning there are mushrooms a-plenty for everyone to live under. Of course, the troll family gets the biggest and the best to replace their old domicile, just as everybody tries to get another party started. But the trolls opt for some alone time and learn to enjoy their new “community” of mushroom dwellers.

To be honest, I don’t much about Anita Lobel other than coming across some of her other work, that she was born in Krakow, Poland and spent some childhood time “ducking Nazis” during WWII. That sounds like enough for anyone. In fact, later on when I found out where she came from and some of her childhood travails during the war I could see that reflected in the story and art.

” … and he strolled away to visit friends and neighbors.”

It’s a super little gem that I was thrilled to get back under my mushroom.

I was just working on a post for my kid’s book blog about books from my childhood that are out of print and UNDER A MUSHROOM is at the top of the list! I, too, was enthralled by it as a kid an pored over the minutiae of the illustrations. And yeah, it is pretty hippie-ish. Lobel’s life story is pretty amazing. Did you know she was married to Arnold Lobel, creator of FROG & TOAD? Glad to know someone else out there was as entranced by this book as I was, and glad to know that our parents had enough good sense to hang on to this book!

Hey, thanks for checking in … isn’t that one a real gem?

I love that book. I don’t know much about her really, other than just the bit I had to put in above. I know of her husband, but that’s about it. I need to tend to my children’s book interest more …

I’m hanging onto this one … timeless …

I am ecstatic that I found this post! I have been looking for this book since fourth grade (I’m 37). The illustrations stuck with me for years and I think were the catalyst for me falling in love with cob houses and natural building. I have tears in my eyes. Thank you.

You’re welcome … it’s a gem of a little book. To be honest, I had no idea it was so cherished by so many folks … But it makes perfect sense that it is.

Didn’t mean to make you cry!

Under A Mushroom was my favorite book. I spent many happy hours investigating each page of wonderful artwork with a sharp eye, intent on scouring every minute detail. My childhood book has long been gone, but last year I found this book online at either Amazon or Alibris. SO happy to have it again!!

I’ve added to our Anita Lobel collection: The Troll Music, The Rose in My Garden, and No Pretty Pictures – A Child of War.
