The other job scored a tasty back and forth with Steven Cerio…printmaker, illustrator (think The Residents for only one point of entry), filmmaker, ringleader and brains behind improg-sters Atlantic Drone…He’s a dizzy talent and a hell of a gentlemen. Head on over…split milk and ids, free association, Rick Wakemen’s wardrobe, mac & cheese and much, much more…

“I’ve been trying to replace detail with big gestures. My brain is having trouble with it but I’ll keep trying. I enjoy the residue of hard labor in detail, but I enjoy the residue of hard thinking even more.”

Thirty Three and a Third (Point Two) Art Show:
Second Verse, Same As the First

“ELKADER, Iowa—If it ain’t broke… why fix it? The digital music craze may one day totally erase all evidence of the physical album. But the record cover will always remain an icon to music (and art) lovers everywhere. Which is why the “rules” of this year’s Thirty Three and a Third (point two) Art Show remain the same as last.

Starting on Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011, Schera’s Fine Art in Elkader will host the first leg of the Thirty Three and a Third Point Two Art Show. The show features 33 and a third different artists and designers reinterpreting and re-imagining existing album covers in their own unique style. The size of each piece is 12” by 12” (the size of a vinyl LP), and the Iowa participants, along with many featured national and international artists, are using a variety of different media to come up with their covers.

Local illustrator and designer Dana Lechtenberg created and is once again curating the show, and his 5-year-old daughter, Emmalene, will be the final “third” artist rounding out the 33 and a third participants. “Last year’s response to the show was amazing,” Lechtenberg says. “The international coverage we received blew me away. We even had a magazine in Tokyo write a story on the show. This year is shaping up to be just as good as last year. The submissions have been incredible so far.”

BRAD HOLLAND: CONFESSIONS OF A SHORT ORDER ARTIST

Brad Holland is one of the most influential illustrators of the 20th Century. The New York Times, in nominating him for a Pulitzer Prize, wrote that his work goes “beyond the moment to illuminate a general condition universal in space and time. The images are sometimes brutal, but the feeling is almost always compassionate.” The Washington Post has called him “an undisputed star of American Illustration,” and the editors of RSVP, the artists directory, voted him “the one artist, who in our opinion, has had the single greatest impact on the illustration field during the last twenty five years.” Writing in Print magazine, critic Steven Heller concluded, “as [Jackson] Pollock redefined plastic art, Holland has radically changed the perception of illustration.” [more]

Every Friday Phil D. comes in to clean up my mess after Sunrise Ocean Bender and to drop his fantastic Breakfast Blend on the hungry masses. Phil not only spins a mean show, he wields a mighty pen. His latest venture, Richmond Macabrerecently crawled out into the light…

The mighty Phil was recently on WTVR with comrade Beth Brown to give the skinny, bones and…no bones maybe…, on Richmond Macabre. You’ve heard Phil D., now see him in action: Richmond Macabre on WTVR.

Fifteen tales of ghosts, vampires, zombies, and unnamable terrors that dare you to peer into the shadows of the River City, but you must first be certain you are prepared to glimpse the horrors that lie within.

A musical treasure at the alter-ego from illustrator Steve Cerio‘s Atlantic Drone. Whether you traffic in the waters of space and psych rock or not, Cerio’s work may be something you’re already familiar with. If not, check it out…stellar work, both for the ears and for the eyes:

Late to the party again, but at least I made it. Dropped in 2009, Atlantic Drone‘s A Vivified Cube Explains the Universe is a sprawling joy ride through spaces both empty and full. Packed with boiling space, psych and prog rock that points to outfits like Can and Crimson as well as more fringe dwelling denizens like the Butthole Surfers and Primus, Cube should satisfy anyone’s jones for sonics that free the mind, as well as make you think. Pulling from a wide range of influences that may not look like they belong side by side on paper to some, Atlantic Drone not only finds common ground, but coaxes all the ingredients into their own heady brew, weaving it all together seamlessly. Cube moves between the challenging and the soothing both, blurring the lines between the two and many others, creating passages and sojourns that should appeal to fans of spacey jams and broad expanses of psych and prog textures. Both free and focused, Cube encompasses a wealth of sounds with Atlantic Drone’s sights set fully on flight.
